Go for it if: Slots, bingo or a show in Winnipeg, with your bed a short walk away.
Think twice if: You want resort perks — rooms are plain and there's no pool on the list.

What you're booking

Officially it's the Canad Inns Destination Centre Club Regent Casino Hotel, and it adjoins Club Regent Casino — one of the two Casinos of Winnipeg that Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries operates. Six storeys hold 146 smoke-free rooms that an AAA inspector called "modest", a fair word. Pick One King, One Queen, Two Queen or the One-Bedroom King Suite.

Play and shows

The casino has roughly 1,200 slots — progressives and electronic table games among them — as well as bingo, and live tables open daily from 5:30 pm until 3 am. You must be 18 in Manitoba. Opened in 2014, the Club Regent Event Centre seats 1,300 for comedy and concerts. Inside the hotel, VLTs at Playmaker's Gaming Lounge run 9 am to midnight.

Eating

From Thursday to Sunday, Aaltos lays on a themed dinner buffet, 5–8 pm: turkey, roast beef, surf and turf, chicken and ribs. Sunday brunch there is 10 am–2 pm. Otherwise it's Toukies (the casino lounge), a McDonald's and an ice-cream shop.

Useful details

Park free in the casino parkade. The airport is about 25 minutes (15 km) away. AAA lists 4 pm check-in, 11 am check-out and no pets. Ask for the casino's Stay & Play rate, which gives each Club Card member $15 in free play.

Our call

Good for an Event Centre night or a round of gaming in Winnipeg, but not a resort — and that's what keeps it just outside our top ten.
